I love summer! It’s so great to spend more time outside, and I love to see how much fun the kids are having. Tate loves to water trees and Taylor is just so excited to look at everything!

My organic seeds are doing alright. They seem small, and I forgot to put the top back on their little greenhouse so Mickey the Cat helped himself to a few things. Hopefully they’ll be okay.

We have some new items on the site this month. Purple Prairie Botanicals is based in Minnesota, and makes natural skin care products. I am loving everything from them so far. We have sunscreen lotion, sticks, and lip balm. Also, bug spray and lotion. They all work and smell great. I’m even trying the bug lotion on the dogs as a flea and tick repellent. I spot it on at back of the neck, base of the tail, and belly. So far so good. We’re hoping to head up North the end of June, so I’ll let you know how it fares against the North Woods. You can find all the new products on the Home Page, they will be 10% off for the month of June. You can also find them under the Bug & Sun catagory.

Homemade Dog Treats

My dogs Emma and Phoebe, both have food allergies. There are only two kinds of food they can eat, and it is almost impossible to find a treat that they can have. I found this recipe and they love it! Thought I would share with everyone.

Dog Treats

3/4 c. hot water
1/3 c. margarine ( I used canola oil but any oil will do)
1/2 c. powdered milk ( I never have this on hand so I've used wheat germ and cornmeal, flax would also work but my gals are allergic to it ) ( corn and wheat can be potential allergens too, so use what's best for your pup )
1 tsp. salt
1 egg beaten ( the girls are allergic to eggs so I substitute with 1/4 c. applesauce + 1 tsp. baking powder or 1 banana + 1 tsp. baking powder)
3 c. whole wheat flour ( use what's best for your pup )

Pour hot water over margarine. Stir in powdered milk, salt, and egg. Add flour 1/2 c. at a time. Knead to form a stiff dough. Roll out to 1/4" thickness and cut out shapes. Bake at 325 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

Propylene Glycol in Artificial Vanilla Flavor

So I just got some of the good clear vanilla extract that my sister-in-law picked up from Mexico. I like using the clear because it tastes so much better than the artificial brown stuff. Unfortunately, there is corn syrup in this formula which totally grosses me out. Any type of corn syrup is just disgusting, and I don't like that it's in just about everything that we consume.

After seeing that there is corn syrup in the clear stuff, I thought I would check the ingredient list for the artificial vanilla that I had in the cupboard. To my surprise, the second ingredient is propylene glycol. For those of you that don't know propylene glycol is found in a lot of personal care products, especially deodorants, and is thought to cause cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies and immune system toxicity, skin and eye irritations, organ system toxicity, endocrine disruption, and neurotoxicity. It is a relative of antifreeze, and should not be in our personal care products let alone our food products.

So if you've got some vanilla in your cupboard, check the ingredients and toss it out if it says propylene glycol. You can get some organic and fair trade vanilla extract at Frontier Natural Products Co-op. Take care of yourselves and I'll talk to you soon.

New Eco Nap Colors

Hi there! West Paw Design has added a few new colors to their Eco nap pet beds. The Oatmeal/Bear is no longer available, but they now have a great yellow bed (Marigold/Bear) and a gray bed (Slate/Bear). The beds are made in Montana from recycled pop bottles. 85% of the exterior fabric, and 50% of the interior fabric are made up of this pop bottle material. They are super soft and wash up really well. We have the Extra Small bed for our Rat Terrier/Jack Russel mix Phoebe, and we have the Extra Large bed for our Yellow lab Emma. The girls love their beds and use them all the time, the cats really like them too. They also fit really nicely into their kennels.
